How to avoid sun damaged hair? We all naturally know how important it is to apply sunscreen to our skin during those long, hot summer days to prevent our skin from damage. But did you know the sun can also damage your hair too?
If your hair has prolonged exposure to the sun, UVA and UVB rays can damage the outside cover of the hair strand, called the cuticle! Let's not forget the sun can naturally bleach or lighten your hair.
Sun damage can come in the forms of discolouration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizzy-ness. You can always tell if your hair is damagedย by seeing if itย has a dry look and feel, is unmanageable and wonโt hold a curl or style. Damaged hair usually dries quickly, too.
All hair types are prone to damage, no matter the colour or texture.ย
Your hair is particularly vulnerable to sun damage if itโs fine or coloured. That finer, lighterย hair lacksย the thickness or pigmentation that can protect it from the sunย damage. While darker, coarser hair usually is oilier, and its thick, darker colour and oil covering help to protect it. Your hair is also more fragile and more prone to sun damage if you have thin, flat or tightly coiled hair.
The good news is that you can take precautions to protect your hair fromย summer heat.
